Welcome First Win

Jerry Wright and the umpire's brother secured the bulk of the runs required

We won the toss and invited
the visitors to bat, conscious of our long tail. Having thought
we would we be opening with JJBW and myself, it was nice to see
Alex & Ashley operating in tandem. Both frequently beat the
bat, and restricted the opposition to 39 off 17 overs, although
Alex bowling the opener for a duck was our only success. We then
further choked the opposition with tight spells from 'the war horses'
yielding 4 wkts for less than 60 runs in the next 20 overs. The
next generation, Toby and Matt H. then continued to demonstrate
their promise, taking 3 further wkts (Toby 2 in 2 for the second
time this season), and N.Holmwood closed at 134-8 at tea. Bowling
figs:
Alex C. 10-4-9-1, Ashley W. 8-0-25-0, Jerry W. 10-5-22-2, Toby C. 4-0-12-2, Matt H. 3-0-19-1, and myself 10-1-35-2. It looked a very reachable target but with our
fragile batting it was important that the specialist batsmen produced
the goods. We lost Jerry S. early on to a leading edge but Jerry
W. and Ashley added 45 before Ash was caught for 37. At 56-2 the
game could have gone either way, but we then witnessed an excellent
partnership between Jerry and Alex, which saw us home with 8wkts
(well 7 actually) and 10 overs to spare. It was a fine piece of
disciplined batting with JJBW playing sheet anchor 24 n.o. and
Alex 53 n.o., including 2 enormous sixes, the first one matching
anything messrs. Frampton and Redfern have ever struck. It was
Alex's second 50 of the season and couldn't have come at a better
time. |
