Last pair hang on

Guess who?

Having enjoyed by far the better of the opening fixture against Pyestock last week, we were brought back down to earth this week when we were forced to hang on against T.V.R., who were considerably stronger then when we last met them. T.V.R. amassed 178-4, in two sessions either side of a major downpour and an early tea. Our bowling was steady but again lacked a little penetration (early season cobwebs). The bowling figures were Alex C. 9-1-30-1,
Robin L. 6-1-19-0, Dave Fr. 6-1-26-0, Jerry W. 7-2-15-1, Ian C. 4-0-20-0, Edgar F. 4-0-24-1, and Matt Hallam 2-0 18-0. Edgar Fernandes claimed his first wicket in his comeback season which we hope will be the first of many, and Matt Hallam bowled with good pace at the end of the innings and looks very promising for the future. Mick Reeve had a competent day behind the stumps deputising for Howard Smith, although Alex's pace and the ridge at the pavilion end gave him a torrid time early on.

In reply, we had only 45mins plus the 20overs to get the runs. Against a more than handy opening attack, we found ourselves 22-2 after 8 overs. Jerry W. with 29, and Alex C. with 17, staged a mini fightback to 63-2, but when both fell in rapid succession to superb catches, we struggled to hang on with a number of 'specialist' batsmen getting out to 'disappointing' shots. The writer was then obliged to demonstrate his forward defensive technique, supported by the Hallams, to earn the draw. The bowling was useful, but we will bat a lot better than this most weeks.
