Hard graft for honourable draw

The beautiful setting for cricket at Littlewick
Green
| I am pleased to report that our unbeaten start to the season continued last Sunday with a hard fought draw achieved against a very strong batting side, fielding 4 Saturday league batsmen. The ground must be amongst the prettiest we have played on, with a firm batting wicket and picturesque surroundings. Indeed the setting attracted several away supporters including the current Mrs Cudworth and the current Mrs Wright! | |
| Littlewick Green described themselves a team made up of mainly Sunday players, a few first team players and a couple of lads. Unfortunately the 4 first team Saturday players were all good batters, including the best bat in their club, and would bat nos.1-4. We toiled hard in 78 degree heat, having lost the toss, and had to dig deep to restrict them to 242-4. Their 'best bat' scored 91, although we made life easier for him by dropping him twice in quick succession before he really opened up. He was particularly savage on Toby, who suffered his first serious mauling against a very destructive hitter, although Jerry W. and Robin L. both took a bit of stick. In the absence of Matt H., my guest Brett Jacobs bowled a steady spell of left arm seamers without any luck. We fielded keenly with Jerry W. starring at mid off and long off in particular, although three other catches went down during the innings. Bowling figures were Robin L. 8-0-53-0, Jerry W. 12-0-69-2, Toby C. 4-0-44-0, Brett Jacobs 9-0-47-0, and myself 9-1-27-2. | |
| After a splendid tea taken at the local pub on the village green, we set about our reply. In the absence of Edgar and Rob Symondson I opted for an experienced opening partnership of Keith Green and Jerry S. Unfortunately we soon found ourselves on the back foot at 7-2 with both openers dismissed to shots they will want to forget. Jerry Wright then played his second excellent knock in a week with good support from Mike Pearmain (31), and Brett Jacobs(28) . | ![]() |
| The chairman continued his miserable start falling to a very smart diving catch at square leg, before Robin L. hit a bright and breezy 22 no. Jerry W. fell just before the close for a gritty 62 and we were happy to finish on 178-7. In truth we were never in serious danger of winning but without Edgar, Rob S., Ash, Alex and Frammo, our offensive batting was very limited. | |
