The Concorde C.C. Golf Day - Sunday 19 October

A great success, with the highest attendance we have yet achieved with 20 players, good weather and an enjoyable day.

It was good to see some old friends including two former players, Bob Braithwaite and Alan Cooling, along with guest players including Mike Cattermole of Sky/Channel Four TV and Mark Wood, both of whom have regulary supported the event. Rob Symondson brought three new guests including his brother and Hersham C.C.sent their usual strong team of four. Paddy Haddow made his golf debut for us and at only15 acquitted himself very well.

The individual Stableford competition saw most players scoring in low to mid twenties with the top positions as follows:

1st. Doug Michael (Concorde C.C). 33pts
2nd. Mark Wood (Guest) 31pts
3rd. Colin Turvill (Hersham C.C.) 30 pts.
4th. Toby Cudworth (Concorde C.C.) 29pts
5th. Chris Searle (Guest) 28pts
6th. Ian Cudworth (Concorde C.C.) 27pts.

Jerry Wright's Team with Mike Cattermole, Mark Wood & Toby Cudworth won the team prize with 100pts. Doug Michael won the longest drive prize, and Chris Turvill of Hersham C.C. won the nearest the pin prize.

A thoroughly good day, which we will repeat next year, and hopefully increase the numbers even further.

Speech by the captain

" May I begin as I l always do by giving our sincere thanks on behalf of all the players to Michael & Hillary Cowan who provide for us a most wonderful facility on which to play our cricket. We are genuinely the envy of all our visitors and it’s no surprise that we play so many home games as our opponents always want to come and play here rather than their own grounds.

This was not an easy season purely because the weather was so bad. We lost an unprecedented 6 games to the weather and played at least as many again on damp wickets and under overcast skies. For the record, we completed 19 games of which we won 6, lost 7 and drew 6. Nevertheless, I think we all enjoyed the season and to my mind, the success of a Club is not measured simply by how many games you win or lose but rather by the camaraderie and pleasure that the members take in being in one anthers company. I think we can truly say that we are a happy club with a wonderful mix of players both young and slightly older and the proof of this is when we go on our West Country tour and we all eat and drink together without any sects or cliques forming.

Its also very much a family club with something like 6 sets of Fathers and Sons playing together which is great fun.

Now the main purpose of the evening is to acknowledge the achievements of the players over the course of the season and as with any other season their were many great deeds accomplished by a large variety of people but inevitably, one or two stand out in every category.

By tradition, we always start with the batting prize. Our batting generally is strong and it was something of a surprise that we did suffer a couple of ignominious defeats this year when the batting order failed to function. Nevertheless, there were 18 innings played in excess of 50 spread between 8 players. John Cardy, Justin Redfern Ashley Westen and myself all managed 1. Edgar, who was not able to play quite as much this year and was not quite up to his usual levels of excellence managed 2 innings over 50 of which one was the only century of the season against the Presidents XI.

Phil Haddow who was a very welcome new recruit made 3 50’s in 7 innings and finished the season with a superb average of 51 and Rob Symondson made 4 50’s in 9 innings and finished with an average of 43.

However, the outstanding batsman was Nick Wright and I hope you will allow me a few moments to just go statistic made. In 14 innings, he made the highest aggregate of runs 457 at the highest average of 57. He played 5 innings over 50 of which 4 were not out, the implication being that he might have gone on to much higher scores had the state of the game permitted it and he hit 23 sixes. Nick is the Batsman of the year.

Our bowling its fair to say has considerable variety and over the course of the season 13 players bowled. Of these , Matt Hallam finished with 10 wickets and I have got to say that for all the effort he puts in, it should have been double but he bowled whole heartedly and without any luck. Phil Haddow also took 10 wickets and was always accurate and Paul Titley took 12 wickets without quite touching the heights of last year. Edgar with less opportunity took 14 wickets and always had the opposition in knots with his leg spin and I took 17 wickets with deceptively non spinning off breaks. However as in previous years, the bowling was carried by the well known firm of Cudworth, Cudworth and Cudworth. Alex due to police commitments was unable to play many games but still took 19 wickets at an average of just above 10. The evergreen Ian took 23 wickets with his cunning medium pace.

As a Captain, however, you always have one bowler that you go to when things are awkward and you need to quieten down the opposition or desperately need a wicket and this year that was the youngest Cudworth, Toby

Toby finished the season with 26 wickets at an average of just over 13. He was always economical and included among those wickets a fantastic spell of 9 for 18, the best ever recorded by a Concorde player since the rebirth of the Club in 19991. Toby is the Bowler of the year.

Fielder of the year is always a tricky one. There are those who are superb ground fielders like Toby, Alex and Nick but perhaps do not field in a position were Catches go most often. There are others who are good catchers but are nor perhaps as lithe as once they were and I hope that Jerry Stockbridge, Mick Reeve and Phil Haddow will not mind if I name them in that category. Selection therefore is always a problem but for the last couple of years, the person who has consistently taken the most outfield catches is Mick Reeve and so I am naming him Fielder of the year not just in recognition of his fielding this year but last year as well.

The All round cricketer trophy is awarded to the person who has made the greatest contribution in all the various disciplines Batting, Bowling and catching and since this was introduced, Alex Cudworth has consistently nailed this down. But as I mentioned earlier, he did not play as many games this year and I do feel that one should be judged from a wider range So this year, I have named Edgar with his 265 runs including a century, 14 wickets and safe catching at slip should be the All Round Cricketer of the year.

It remains only then for me to award the Tony Moody Trophy. This is presented in memory of Tony Moody who played for us some years ago, made a century for us one weekend and then a few weeks later died at the ridiculously early age of 42. The award goes to the person who achieved the oustanding personal performance of the year. For many years this has been awarded to century makers and rather like knighthoods, bowlers don’t get much of a look in. However I believe that taking 5 wickets in an innings is much more difficult that scoring 50 and this is underlined by the fact that although 18 50’s were made this year, only 3 times was 5 wickets in an innings achieved, incidentally by Cudworth, Cudworth and Cudworth.

As I mentioned earlier, Toby Cudworth took 9 for 18 against Cuddington, the best analysis ever by a Concorde Bowler and to my mind equivalent to making a triple century so there can be no second thought. The Moody Trophy goes to Toby Cudworth."
