Cricket Season ends with a rare loss

Hot, sunny weather and a noon start were too much for some of the Concorde faithful and a slightly weakened team took on the London Theatres team. Having done well to get them all out for 170, we discovered at tea time that one of their faithful, a certain Ernie (no relation!) only needed a few wickets to achieve 500 for the club. In an amazing spirit of cricketing comradeship, we managed to get skittled out for 74 with Ernie taking most of the wickets to pass the landmark. Our picture shows him getting a presentation from their Chairman. Our Chairman meanwhile was licking his many wounds and started to plan the AGM and Curry Night which is all we now have to look forward to in 2013

Golf Day Report

Last Sunday saw the annual golf challenge at The Drift, East Horsley. After the traditional round of last minute withdrawals and late recruitment we ended up with 15 players, with only two real guest players, with the other 13 having played for the club at one time or another. We have traditionally enjoyed very good weather for this event so I guess our luck had to break sometime. We started in sunshine but the thundery showers did arrive as forecast and at one one stage in the opening nine holes we all got absolutely drenched for the duration of about 3 holes, so much so, that the first two teams out were considering quitting at the half way stage.

However we battled on and the weather did improve towards the end of the afternoon. Scoring was difficult with no run on the ball and slow putting on wet greens but despite the conditions, six players scored over 30 points with Doug Michael ultimately triumphing with 38 points despite having hardly played this year having had to adapt to life with a young daughter!

Individual competition, leading players: Doug Michael 38 pts Max Saidman 34 Chris Turvill 34 Nick Wright 32 Toby Cudworth 32 Sam Saidman 31

Team Winners with 111pts: Bob Braithwaite Mark Neale Max Saidman Sam Saidman Longest Drive: Charlie McPherson Nearest the pin: Mark Neale

Once again it was good to see former players like Bob Braithwaite, Doug Michael and Justin Redfern, who has missed the last couple of seasons for family reasons, regular supporters like Chris Turvill & Michael Prevost of Hersham C.C. as well as new attendees including Mark Neale & the Saidman bros from Walton C.C. There were a couple of notable absentees including the Chairman (who chose to be on a beach in The West Indies this year rather than getting drowned with the rest of us in Surrey) and I'd also like to mention Chris Blowers, a former player from the 1980's and early 90's. Chris has always supported this event but recently suffered a very serious illness so we all send him our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Presidents Day

Jack Brown on the way to 126*Presidents XIPresidents Day was held on one of the hottest days of the year and the game matched the temperature. A lightning fast outfield, hard wicket, and a goodly selection of fast bowlers on both sides were the factors making the game fun to watch, at least for everyone except the batters. The President's XI made a very challenging score of 237 and Concorde looked to be falling short until Jack Brown hit one of the fastest centuries seen at Sendholme to win with a six and a ball to spare. A good spectator turn out also enjoyed the English wins in the Ashes and Tour de France, and the golfers thought that the American fellow did a good job to win the Open. Triples all round as the sun went down late into the evening.

400 Not Out!

Avid readers (see article below) of the Cudworth 400 Wicket Saga will have been waiting on the edge of their seats to know the latest. With one scalp needed to hit the magic number, our man found the edge of a Harpsden bat early in the game and celebrated with a most interesting routine. Triples all round had to wait until after he tried to bat without pads and out of turn. (See right)

Jordy sets new batting record

On the opening day of the season, and in freezing temperatures, Jordy Dyer stroked his way to 127 not out to set a new club batting record. It had previously been jointly held for some years by David Frampton and Ashley Westen. Our picture sequence shows the highlights.

Cudders getting close to 400

Having created the T-shirt some time ago, it has taken Ian Cudworth a while to approach the 400 wkt mark. On the opening day of the season, with team mates letting him down with several dropped catches, it was remarkable that he still managed to take four wkts and get within a scorers pencil of the great milestone.

Ground set up and nets now starting

The sun is out and the nets are setup. Mike Anning is arranging the net sessions on Thursdays from 18:30.

Annual Awards Dinner

The gongs were handed out at the recent annual dinner (well, lunch actually). None were more deserving than the awards to Nick and Jordyn who performed well all last season. The skipper managed a smile despite not getting an award this year.

Peter Vousden RIP

Sad to report that our former President and Life Vice President Peter Vousden died recently whilst in Spain. There was funeral service at St Peter's Church in Hersham on 26th April 2013, followed by a private cremation.

Sendholme in winter

According to local sages, the hard winter and long period of snow cover will have stimulated the field to grow well this season. Now that the Ice Age is retreating, there are some green shoots and early signs of folk wielding bats and balls in the nets. Anyone seen a cuckoo yet? (This is what they look like)
